A BENEFIT FOR MERCY CORPS' HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF EFFORTS
SEE JOSS WHEDON'S "FIREFLY" ON THE BIG SCREEN
(Presented by PDX Browncoats)
DATE:
Saturday, September 24, 2005
TIME:
1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
LOCATION:
Guild Theater, 829 SW 9th Avenue, Portland OR 97205
WHAT:
Three episodes of Joss Whedon's "Firefly" will be shown at the Guild Theater, with proceeds going to Mercy Corps' hurricane relief efforts on the Gulf Coast.
PRICE:
$7.00 per person, of which $6.00 goes to Mercy Corps' hurricane relief efforts (with $1.00 going to the venue).
There also will be an opportunity to offer additional donations to Mercy Corps above and beyond this ticket price.
DETAILS:
Showing on the 14x23-foot screen at the Guild Theater will be three episodes of "Firefly" -- "Serenity" (the two-hour pilot), "Out of Gas," and "Objects In Space" -- the latter two episodes having been determined by local "Firefly" fans via online poll.
The Guild Theater seats 375 people, so a sell-out would mean a total donation to Mercy Corps in excess of $2,000.
PRIZES:
There will be a costume contest, with prizes for the winners. Details on the contest, and information on the prizes, to be announced at the event.
NOTE ON PROCEEDS:
PDX Browncoats is attempting to cover the up-front costs of theater rental and rights to show "Firefly" so that these costs are not taken from the take at the door on the day of the event.
See the Dropcash campaign if you would like to help cover these up-front costs, so that this benefit event really is only about contributing to Mercy Corps' hurricane relief efforts.
Donating to cover these up-front costs is not a contribution to Mercy Corps and is not tax deductible.
(Please note that the episodes listed on the Dropcash page are not yet confirmed, since local fans are voting until September 23 on which episodes other than the pilot will be presented at this event.)
EXTRA!
Local "Firefly" fans should keep an eye out as Portland's own accidental "Firefly Weekend" continues when M.E. Russell interviews Joss Whedon in the September 25 Sunday Oregonian -- with an even longer version appearing at the culturepulp.com website.
