PDX Browncoats - Flying Since '04 Founders Of
Can't Stop The Serenity

Our History

Since 2004 Portland Firefly fans have had a strong online presence. Anticipation of the movie Serenity brought us together on forums and message boards, which over time has resulted in becoming active in the community.

In the summer of 2004, with the creation of the official Serenity movie website, Portland fans of Firefly found each other online. There was much excitement in anticipation of an April release, and we began monthly get-togethers. When the movie was pushed to September, some of the enthusiasm lost steam. After a winter break a small number of us continued to meet up, but the group did not start flourishing until 2005.

In 2005, advanced screenings of the movie Serenity brought more local fans together. From that point on, we have met up at least once a month for shindigs, movies, and various other events in town. A lot of us have become close friends, and some of us even owe our home or job to the local Browncoat community.

The PDX Browncoats are not only interested in getting together and having a good time, but also in making a difference. Inspired by an idea born in the mind of Portland Browncoat The One True b!X, Can't Stop The Serenity (global screenings of the movie Serenity to benefit Equality Now) paved the way for fans continue to enjoy the movie on the big screen with other like-minded folk, while at the same time raise awareness of and funds for the favorite cause of Joss Whedon. In 2006 Portland raised more than $7,000 at its screening, and in 2007 almost doubled that amount -- both times raising more than any other city.

From message board to shindig, for three years Firefly/Serenity fans in Portland have been corresponding online and getting together at various restaurants and in each other's homes, continuing to discuss new ways to engage and support the community.
